Helen Mary Janney (HMJ) was born in 1878 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to T.B. Janney and Mary Wheaten Janney. Her father was a hardware merchant. She attended Stanley Hall in Minnesota prior to attending Smith College. She was very active in student activities at Smith.
